Test Format and Scoring

In the TOEFL IBT exam, students' speaking skills, listening skills, reading skills and writing skills are measured.

TOEFL changed their scoring from a 120 point scale to a 6 point scale in January 2026. Each section (Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing) are given a score between 1.0 and 6.0. The final score is an average of all these sections and the final score will be between 1.0 and 6.0 in increments of half points (.5).

The test takes approximately 2 hours to complete.

AN IMPORTANT CHANGE:

'' TOEFL MY BEST SCORES '' will give the best score from each individual section over the last 2 years.

For Example:

TOEFL 1 - 22.04.2019 R: 5 L: 4 S: 4 W: 4

TOEFL 2 - 14.08.2020 R: 4 L: 5 S: 4 W: 4

TOEFL 3 - 07.07.2019 R: 4 L: 4 S: 5 W: 4

TOEFL MY BEST SCORE: R: 5 L: 5 S: 5 W: 4

The highest scores you have received in the last 2 years will be your score. TOEFL MY BEST SCORES are only accepted at certain institutions.

Reading and Listening sections are evaluated by the computer. The reading section consists of reading paragraphs from academic papers and answering relevant questions.

The listening section consists of any lesson, a debate or conversation in the classroom and answering the questions related to them.

Each of the 4 sections in the Speaking Section is evaluated between 1 and 6.

The writing section consists of an integrated and academic discussion compositions. It is evaluated between 1 and 6 in 2 sections. In the writing section, items such as developing ideas, organization of the composition, grammar, vocabulary, and completely answering the question are evaluated. Answers in the speaking and writing section are scored by ETS's certified exam evaluation experts.

Each section is evaluated between 1 and 6.
